Olde English Bulldogge vs French Bulldog

Both are bulldogs. They share almost nothing else.

By Lesli Rose · Updated May 2026

The French Bulldog has been the most popular breed in America for several years running. The Olde English Bulldogge is much rarer. They're both called "bulldogs" but they fit completely different lifestyles, budgets, and risk profiles.

One-sentence summary. A French Bulldog is a small (16–28 lb) very short-muzzled companion bred for apartment life and constant company; the Olde English Bulldogge is a medium (50–80 lb) athletic working-style dog that needs exercise.

Size

French Bulldog: 11–13 inches at the withers, 16–28 pounds.

Olde English Bulldogge: 16–20 inches, 50–80 pounds. Three to four times the weight of a Frenchie.

Breathing

The French Bulldog is one of the most brachycephalic breeds in existence. BOAS is extremely common. Many require soft-palate or nostril surgery to breathe normally. They cannot tolerate heat, cannot fly in cargo, and snore loudly even at rest.

The OEB has a longer, more functional muzzle and most do not have BOAS. They breathe normally at rest, exercise without distress, and tolerate moderate heat.

Exercise needs

French Bulldog: 20–30 minutes of light walking per day. Tires quickly. Often happy to be carried.

Olde English Bulldogge: 60+ minutes of meaningful exercise per day. Long walks, hiking, structured play, training. Will get destructive without it.

Lifespan

French Bulldog: Median 10–12 years. Health-related early deaths common.

Olde English Bulldogge: Median 11–12 years, healthy individuals to 14.

Cost

French Bulldog: $3,500–$8,000 USD from a registered breeder. Specialty colors (lilac, merle, fluffy) push prices into the five figures. Higher prices reflect almost-mandatory artificial insemination, C-section delivery, and common surgical needs.

Olde English Bulldogge: $1,500–$3,500 USD from an OBBA-registered breeder. Lower upfront cost and lower lifetime vet cost.

Who should pick which

Pick a French Bulldog if: you live in a small apartment, want a low-energy companion, can budget for $5,000+ upfront and ongoing vet care, and want a dog that is genuinely happy to exist on a couch.

Pick an Olde English Bulldogge if: you have space and time for a medium-sized active dog, want bulldog presence with bulldog health, want lower upfront and lifetime cost, and want a dog that can keep up with an active family.
